Bruges & PSP Installation

London based Jason Bruges Studio put together an interactive video installation at the V&A Museum, consisting on an array of 50 organically arranged TFT display screens showing a broken grid of visuals. Content that was fed from a PSP connected to a computer running Isadora to split the signal into components through several outputs before going to the screens.

Rhytmus 21 by Hans Richter

German artist, writer and filmmaker Hans Richter's first film
Rhytmus 21 (1921) was first shown in public on July 6th 1923 in France, showcasing his experiments with moving geometrical shapes and explorations between positive and negative space. The original film was actually silent and it was extended over the years and renamed as Rhythmus 23, and Rhythmus 25 according to the year it was re-released (1923 and 1925 respectively).

One of our readers was kind to correct my previous info, so here it goes:

"The original film was roughly two minutes long. Over the next two years Richter worked on the film and extended it to almost seven minutes. Before October 16th, 1927 when the film was screened at the Film Society in London, Richter divided the film in two parts and later on called it Rhythmus 21 and Rhythmus 23. In the following year Richter created another chapter, Rhytmus 25, which didn't survive."

Every time I see something like this, it reminds me of how much you can accomplish without abusing technology. Echopraxia means:
a) Involuntary imitation of movements made by another.
Also called echomotism.
b) Pathological repetition of the actions of other people
as if echoing them.
c) An incredible motion piece by Chinese visual artist Fu Pok Yan

Quartz Composer by Momo

I just came across with Surya's experiments in Quartz Composer.
This is a technology I have not had time to dive into myself, as I can't seem to make it work on my computer for some reason, but looks very nice. Cityscape, Pixel invaders and Ribbon cube are some of my favorites, really nice work!
He is also kind enough to share his source files, for people to download and learn.

Live visuals excerpt

Here is a fragment of a recent gig I did on 01/ 19/ 06 at the Belly Up here in San Diego.
As a response to the style of music and how it is performed live, I decided to go with an analog feel, using digital equipment, with sampled and captured footage from industrial/ scientific monitoring devices such as oscilloscopes, logic and spectrum analyzers, optical reflectometers, etc.

Marco Brambilla's Cyclorama

I was lucky enough to enjoy this installation piece at the SFMOMA
by Marco Brambilla, consisting of nine monitors mounted on a cylindrical structure, where video loops of nine different revolving rooftop restaurants play endesly, in what it appears to be, stop motion photography. Each monitor displays a complete rotation of the space and all of them are played at the same time in consecutive monitors, working as a one rotation, giving whoever is inside the structure, the sense of standing in a spinning room.

Sand Painting Performance

Hungarian artist, animator, filmmaker and designer Ferenc Cako will leave you speechless just by using his own hands, a bucket of sand and an overhead projector, painting live, to an incredible musical piece. But that's not all, he also has an extensive body of work, consisting on clay and sand animation pieces.

I/O Brush

Morgan was kind enough to share this really cool link with me:
The I/O Brush, looks like a physical version of the clone stamp tool in Photoshop, with the ability to sample motion thanks to a a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside the actual brush. I can think of a million ways to use this on a live act right now!!!

Netlag: Webcam Video

With the help of a software called "Picksucker" that saves one image every 10 minutes from 1609 webcams positioned around the planet shooting frames at the same time during an entire day, Pleix created a a very interesting motion piece, placing those web cam images with the shape of a geographical world map, showing you the activity of life in the rest of the world, no matter where you are. What a concept!
