Recap: Brokenbeat February '09
[ English ] Here are some of the photos and video from the last Brokenbeat Night this time, with live visuals by Xarene Eskandar and Naute, where they experimented with a new project, called Andiamo that Andres (Naute) is developing in Processing, to incorporate live drawing, realtime video tracking, and is performed in "team mode" with Modul8. [ Castellano ] Aca algunas de las fotos y video de lo que fue el ultimo Brokenbeat Night, esta vez con las visuales en vivo de Xarene Eskandar y Naute, quienes experimentaron con un nuevo proyecto llamado Andiamo, que Andres (Naute) esta construyendo en Processing, y que utiliza dibujo y tracking de video en timpo real y es actuado en "modo equipo" con Modul8. [ English ] A little late, but here are some photos from the last Brokenbeat and first one of the year, featuring L.A. based Cyber Patrol Unit (Bryant Place) on the visuals.
Probably one of the best nights I've seen so far, the dancefloor was still packed with people wanting more when the lights went on, it was very inspiring to me. Bryant visuals were hypnotic and while I was checking them out, they inspired me to create a motion piece for the next Brokenbeat night, I asked him to help me out and I think its coming along nice, this could be a new way to promote the night, were I can collaborate with different Vjs, locals as well as from abroad.

Brokenbeat was voted "San Diego's best Intelligent Dance Music Night" by weekly paper San Diego City Beat, you can read a little interview we did with here.

On the Musical side we had a special night featuring live electronic music with Secuencia virtual, DJ The Messenger, Rise of the Speedmen, and Breakah.
[ Castellano ] Aca algunas fotos de lo que fue el ultimo Brokenbeat Night, aca en San Diego, California. El Vj invitado de la noche fue Charley Ten mostrando muy buenos trabajo, Charley es tambien un DJ, si les gusta el House, bajen algunos de sus sets en su pagina, muy bueno.
En la parte musical tuvimos musica electronica en vivo con Secuencia Virtual, DJ The Messenger, Rise of the Speedmen y Breakah.
[ English ] Here are some photos of last saturday's Brokenbeat night. This was the first time we had 3 Vjs in the same night, unfortunately we couldn't jam all 3 at the same time, but we'll do it soon I'm sure. Creator of NeuroMixer, Vj Faderwas kind enough to join us from LA. I got the chance to see how neuromixer works, and I have to say, it's really user friendly, if you get a chance, try it out. He even has a free version that it's great for beginners.
Also performing was Ciber Patrol Unit also from Los Angeles, but he performed as part of Turbo Scum, a trio conformed by CPU on the visuals and D.C. Dj duo Party On Marz. I was blown away, by the act. Turbo Scum uses 3 laptops, a Micro Korg controller and 2 Lemur/ Jazz Mutant controllers. Peep the video above.
[ Castellano ] Aca algunas fotos de lo que fue el ultimo Brokenbeat. Esta fue la primera vez que hubo 3 Vjs en una noche, lamentablemente no pudimos hacer un trio jam simultaneamente, pero lo dejaremos para la proxima. El creador de NeuroMixer, Vj Fader vino desde L.A. y tube la chance de ver como Neuromixer trabaja, debo mencionar que es muy amigable a primera vista, y como fader tiene una version gratuita en su pagina, lo hace ideal para aquel que quiera empezar a hacer visuales.
Tambien participando estuvo Ciber Patrol Unit tambien de Los Angeles, pero como parte de Turbo Scum, un trio conformado por el DJ duo de D.C. Party On Marz muy pero muy buena la presentacion, Turbo Scum usa 3 laptops, un controlador Micro Korg y 2 controladores multi touchLemur/ Jazz Mutant. un fragmento en video arriba.

[ English ] Here some photos from a gig I did last week, considering I improvised the projections set up in 1hr and 30 min, I think it came out pretty good. 3 projectors in a small gallery, for me and my dots. I'm still getting used to my new fishy lens, (Tokina 10-17mm) photos either come sharp or with noise most of the time, but sometimes I get to find the balance between both, overall I think photos came out pretty nice. The reason I shoot it myself is because most event photographers ignore screens and shoot with a flash, the light bounces on the projections and it ends up washing them out, so I decided to shoot from the VJ perspective, you may not see the Dj's face, but you will see the visuals :)
[ Castellano ] Aca algunas fotos que tome en un evento la semana pasada, teniendo en cuenta que tuve que improvisar todo en 1hr 30min, creo que quedo bastante bien. 3 proyectores en un local pequeno para mi y mis puntitos. Todavia me estoy acostumbrando a mi nuevo lente fishy, (Tokina 10mm-17mm) las fotos salen en foco o con ruido, pero a veces le agarro la mano y encuentro el balance. La razon por la que tomo las fotos es por que la mayoria de los fotografos de eventos, ignoran las pantallas y toman fotos con flash, la luz rebota en las projecciones y las lava, entonces comence a tomar fotos desde el punto de vista del VJ, quizas no salen las caras de los Djs, pero se van a ver las pantallas :)
English Just wanted to share a few pictures I took from some of the VJs that had performed the past year at Brokenbeat, The goal is to have at least 1 different Vj every night, I've met so many incredible artists thanks to this event, each one with their own style and set up, and since the nature of the VJ is to hang out in the dark, away from the spotlight, you can't really recognize their faces like it would happen with a Dj or a musician, so I thought it would be nice to put a face to the name. Thanks to everyone that was kind enough to support a FREE event, I hope we can have more new faces doing visuals soon!
Castellano Solo queria compartir algunas de las fotos que fui tomando de diferentes VJs que han participado en Brokenbeat en los ultimos meses, la meta seria traer al menos 1 Vj diferente cada noche, gracias a esto he podido conocer a varios artistas increibles, cada uno con su estilo, y su set up y como usualmente la naturaleza del VJ es estar en la oscuridad, nunca se les ven las caras, como pasaria con musicos y Djs. Pense que seria bueno poner algunas caras con los nombres. Gracias a todos los que han participado en un evento completamente GRATUITO, Ojala podamos seguir viendo caras nuevas haciendo visuales muy pronto!
[ English ] Here a few photos from the last Brokenbeat night, once again L.A. based, Vj Fill was our guest Vj for the night, and every time he is around I hear compliments from people I know and complete strangers, Fill has this thing with security cameras, that he spreads around the venue, and uses to do realtime scratching(scrubbing?), and I think a lot of people noticed that when he started using it on the dancing crowd, as they wondered "how is he doing that?"
On the music side we had the heavy sounds of dubstep with Osal8 and Breakah and on the jazzy side Cuttyman and Dj Collagey
Also a little video flyer I made for the event, consistent with the print flyers, same type, colors etc.
[ Castellano ] Aqui algunas fotos del ultimo Brokenbeat night, una vez mas Vj Fill de Los Angeles fue el Vj Invitado a participar a mi lado, cada vez que anda por aca recibo elogios de conocidos y gente que no conosco, Fill tiene esta mania con camaras de seguridad, que utiliza en su rig distribuyendolas por el local y que utiliza en sus visuales haciendo scratch (scrub?) en tiempo real. y creo que la audiencia lo nota, sobretodo cuando los incluye en las pantallas, mientras ellos se preguntan: "como hace eso?"
En el lado musical tuvimos los sonidos pesados del dubstep de la mano de Osal8 y Breakah y del lado jazzy a Cuttyman y Dj Collagey
Tambien pueden ver un pequeno video flyer que hice para el evento, manteniendo consistencia con los flyers impresos.
[ English ] A few weeks ago, the AIGA Y-13 Conference was held here in San Diego. I was commissioned to do all the motion work to brand the conference and later I got the chance to organize the entertainment for the after party. The conference targeted graphic designers and discussed their possibilities to develop sustainable solutions (and questions) on their work. The first part was the opening montage (for each day). The entire work was done in After Effects and Illustrator. That, took most of my time, considering that I'm still new to AE, but I think overall it came out clean.
For the after party I decided to team up with the Djs Beau (Re:Up Magazine) and Walker (Brokenbeat) for the music, and for the visuals I wanted to keep the branding used for the conference, So I did a bit of a remix of the original opening montage, and added a few elements, the faces you see, are from the conference speakers, the type work gives 15 easy to accomplish eco-friendly tips to apply on their work, a short stop motion animation showing the conference's badge, and through the entire Vj set I aimed to keep in tune with all the visual elements used on the conference, colors, type family, etc.
During the opening montage, a series of quotes, from different people were used, from John Lennon to Stephen Hawken, I suggested that those same quotes were mixed with the music as well. Not to mention all 3 of us where dressed with black turtle necks and black framed glasses (designer stereotype). fun night!
[ Castellano ] Algunas semanas atras, la conferencia AIGA Y-13 Conference fue llevada acabo aqui en San Diego, La conferencia iba dirigida a disenadores y discutia las posibilidades de generar preguntas y respuestas con animos de crear un trabajo mas en tono con el medio ambiente. A mi cargo estaban las animaciones para el branding del evento, incluyendo el after party. Los montajes de apertura (uno para cada dia) fueron realizados en After effects e Illustrator, que fue lo que mas tiempo me llevo, considerando que aun soy un poco novato con AE, pero dentro de todo creo que salio bastante limpio.
Para el After Party decidi agruparme con los Djs Beau (revista Re:Up) y Walker (Brokenbeat) para la musica y para las visuales queria mantener la tematica del evento, por lo que remixe el montaje de apertura, las caras que se ven son de los presentadores de la conferencia, Los loops de tipografia describen 15 pasos simples para incorporar en el trabajo del disneador a fines de crear opciones eco-amigables. Manteniendo los colores e incorporando la marca de la conferencia dentro de las visuales. Durante los montajes de apertura se pueden oir frases sobre la sustentabilidad que van desde John Lennon hasta Stephen Hawken, esas mismas frases fueron mezcladas con la musica durante la fiesta. Para rematar los tres nos vestimos con polera negra y anteojos de cuadro negros (estereotipo de disenador) Muy divertido.

[ Castellano ] Aca algunas fotos del pasado Brokenbeat, el bar estaba lleno de gente Mucha gente y la musica estuvo increible. No aguanto hasta la proxima.
[ English ] Some photos from Crosswired's opening night. I also got some video of Jarrett Smith's visuals, The audio is very crappy, sorry about that (I was standing right next to the speakers) Other than that, it was a great night. I started my set late, so by the time I was just getting into that creative zone, the event was over. I wish it was longer!! I'm going to try making it up there again, to see another vjs. Remember this is going on till May11th!!.
[ Castellano ] Algunas fotos de la noche de apertura de Crosswired. Tambien pude tomar video del set de Jarrett Smith, pero el sonido es bastante malo, pido disculpas pero estaba parado justo al lado de los parlantes. Fuera de eso fue muy buena noche, empece mi set tarde por lo que cuando empezaba a adentrarme en esa zona creativa, el evento termino, hubiera querido que fuera un poco mas largo. Voy a ver si puedo mandarme de nuevo para alla a ver a otros Vjs. Recuerden que esto sigue hasta el 11 de Mayo.
[ English ] Here some photos from last Brokenbeat night, our guest visualist for the evening was VJ RASTER , and I was very impressed with her work, Its was great to have her, and I look forward for her to join us again, very soon!. We also came up with a different visual set up for the venue, and I was able to use a very large TV that is always sitting there. I was able to shoot a bit of video of her set for Alien Tom, again, my camera is very crappy but I think its a good idea to document a bit of every the night.
[ Castellano ] Aqui las fotos del ultimo Brokenbeat, nuestra VJ invitada fue RASTER , I en realidad quede muy impresionado con su trabajo, fue muy bueno que haya venido y espero que pronto nos vuelva a acompanar. Entre los dos cambiamos un poco el set up de las visuales, y pude conectar una tele gigante que hay en el fondo y que siempre esta apagada, quedo muy bueno. Pude filmar un poco del set de ella con Alien Tom, my camara no es muy buena pero creo que es buena idea documentar fragmentos de la noche.
[ English ] Here are some photos and video from the last Brokenbeat night, probably one of the best nights so far, the venue was absolutely packed, it was insane. The guest Vj of the month was RE:VISION and he did an amazing job, Musical acts included MEMESHIFT , TOM BURBANK and JEGA, all 3 of them killed it. The opening Dj (I can't never remember her name) was throwing some really nice tunes, this is the second time she opens the night and did a great job as well.

[ Castellano ] Aqui algunas fotos del evento del viernes pasado en la fiesta recepcion de JAPG Studio en LA, donde estuve haciendo visuales como parte del equipo de Borders Collapse. La musica estuvo a cargo de El Poeta, Tom Burbank and Walker. El resultado, una noche increible, buena vibra y un bonito espacio, cuando es la proxima?
[ English ] Here are some pics and video from the last brokenbeat, with Momo the Monster as our Guest Vj, There is also some footage of the night, The first video is a bit of Momo's visual set for Disrupter, the second video is a fragment from our set together for Frik n Frak.
I managed to put together a translucid screen for this event, still working on how to improve it a bit, but it's coming along. One thing I noticed (and many of the Brokenbeat usuals) is that usually people hang out in the back of the venue, this time people where in front, was it the music? the new screen? or maybe Momo's charm?
[ Castellano ] Aqui algunas fotos de lo que fue el ultimo Brokenbeat con nuestro VJ invitado, Momo the Monster tambien subi unos videos de esa noche, el primero es un fragmento del set de Momo para Disrupter, el segundo es un fragmento de nuestro set juntos para Frik n Frak.
Para este ultimo evento arme una pantalla translucida, todavia tratando de mejorarla pero va saliendo. Una cosa que notamos es que en grall siempre la gente se queda en la parte de atras, esta vez la concentracion de gente se vino para adelante, habra sido la musica?, la pantalla nueva? o quizas el talento de momo?
[ English ] So here are some photos of the event, it was great, I still can't believe the ammount of people that showed up, on a wednesday night. It was the first time I had to Vj with lights on, that was a bit weird, but it didn't bother me too much.
I also was commissioned to develop a few branding animations for the clothing store and some of the sponsors of the event, so I uploaded one I did for the store wich I thought it had a good concept, basically the store is located near an iconic sign in the University Heights area, so the animation basically shows the location of the store from that sign, colors, easthetics and style of animation follow the identity of the store.
[ Castellano ] Aca algunas fotos del evento pasado, estuvo muy bueno, no puedo creer la cantidad de gente que habia por ser un miercoles. Es la primera vez que me toca hacer visuales con las luces prendidas, fue un poco raro pero no me molesto mucho.
El local me habia encargado algunas animaciones con el proposito de reforzar el branding del evento, local y algunos de los sponsors, aqui posteo una que me parecio tubo buen concepto mas alla de la ejecucion, basicamente el local esta ubicado muy cerca de un cartel iconico en el barrio de University Heights, asi que la animacion muestra la ubicacion del local con respecto a ese cartel, colores y estetica estan basados en el logo del local.

[ English ] Last Friday, I was lucky enough to share the booth with Q-Project from Total Science, doing the visuals for the night. What a night! It's been so long since I been to a drum n' bass event, it is my first love and it's the style of music that motivates me the most to make visuals to, All the local Djs that played where amazing as well, great night!. I also got to play a little with the Pioneer DVJ turntables, wich I have never used before, although intimidating at first they where pretty easy to figure it out, and fun to use too. Check back for video footage of the night!
[ Castellano ] El Viernes pasado, tuve la suerte de compartir cabina con Q-Project de Total Science haciendo visuales durante esa noche. Increible! Hacia tanto que no iba a un buen evento de drum n bass, mi primer amor, y el estilo de musica que mas me motiva para hacer visuales. Todos los Djs fueron increibles, muy buena noche!. Tambien pude jugar un poco con las Pioneer DVJ turntables, que nunca habia usado antes, al principio me intimidaron un poco pero fueron bastante facil de utilizar, y divertido tambien. Pronto pondre un video sobre este evento.
